Depeche Mode are behind the wheel once again, and they have no intention of reinventing it. The follow up to the much-underrated 'Exciter' should and will please fans of the band's famously dark, polished maudlin-pop. If a distinction needs to be drawn between this and previous offerings, 2005 marks the moment Dave Gahan started writing for Depeche Mode, carrying on from his respectable if not exceptional debut 'Paper Monsters'. While Gahan endeavours to establish himself, Gore shows us who's the main man, proving once again that he's one of the most consistently excellent songwriters out there. 'A Pain That I'm Used To' has one of those stomping classic DM choruses. 'Precious' could have been plucked from the catalogue at the absolute height of the band's powers, say some point nearing the end of the 80s. Repeated plays do it justice... it's genuinely affecting. The record tapers off slightly, and calling a song 'The Darkest Star' is self-parody in excelsis, but no matter: 'Playing the Angel' is hardly the most essential Depeche Mode album ever, but it is Depeche Mode doing what they do best, making exciting industrial-tinged synth-pop songs.
