As cool as the band name is, it was not always quite as appropriate as it feels here on their debut, Fear Is On Our Side. The band's 2003 self-titled EP was produced by fellow Austin-local Britt Daniel and sounded for all the world like a slightly fuller Spoon transmission. On Fear, produced by Ministry's Paul Barker, they've eschewed some of the straight ahead pop and lost some of the dance-y rhythms that abounded on early songs like â??We're Still the Weaker Sex.â? Instead, the band has embraced a wider, more atmospheric palate in which to drench their pop songs. Coincidently or not the band sounds a little like Barker's early Ministry material (where Ministry was a lot new wave-ier than you might suspect), but more often the band seems to be going for Joy Division or Faith-era Cure atmospherics â?¦ The band's dark, rigorous mechanics still allow for the odd soaring moment, as on the melancholy opener â??The Ghostâ? and the album's highlight â??We Choose Faces.â? The latter makes the best case for the band's choice to work with these uber-serious minor keys and atmospheric swells. Elsewhere, like on â??The Ghost,â? the band seems trapped half-way between the pop sound they used to play and the more ambitious sound they're going for now. Though despite the clunky, chugging guitar on â??According to Plan,â? the song explodes into a glassy, aching chorus, taking off like any good '80s song should. The same applies to â??Lights,â? a song that seems an uncomfortable fit for the band's sound, at least before the song's glistening coda. The second half of the album, including â??We Choose Facesâ? and the buzzing minor-key gem â??Last Ride Togetherâ? is far more effective. The atmosphere is far more consistent and the choruses build out of the songs more naturally. The title track, â??Fear Is On Our Sideâ? is another interesting development that features minor-key brilliance with effects laden drumming, far closer to the dynamic Joy Division sound than their other material, which sounds a lot more like the recent wave of Joy Division imitators. Closer â??If It Was Meâ? is similarly effective, nailing a howling ghostly guitar coda to end things on a high note.
