CD: VOSSA3
RELEASE DATE: 2003
LABEL: Tenor Vossa
01. Steptomycin, Karachi |
The first full length cd from this wild, critically acclaimed, all instrumental
U.K. band. Moly, a quartet signed after answering an NME ad seeking ‘Lo
Fi, Space Rock bands for a possible deal’, can claim a close kinship
with both Mogwai and Ultrasound, but oddly enough there never was much of a
kinship between Mogwai and Ultrasound, allowing Moly to slot right in between
them. The ambition evident here - spacious, brooding and atmospheric washes
of ambient guitar can often backfire, unless the foundations are rock solid,
and the good news is that this meticulously-crafted debut displays a mastery
of the form unheard
since Spacemen 3 hit the eject button. It might seem a bit foolhardy to compare
their first release to the stellar rockisms of Sigur Ros and Mogwai, but it
IS that good and that
rammed
with
rampant, boundary pushing and height scaling intent.
