2007 digitally remastered and expanded pressing of this Australian band's 1984 debut album featuring seven bonus tracks. Australian ambient rock outfit Not Drowning Waving's first full-length album was an extraordinary achievement of musical iconoclasm in the intellectually and spiritually impoverished milieu of Australian music in the 1980s. Adventurous and experimental, it managed to combine haunting, instrumental sounscapes with sweet, minimalist piano-driven ballads and edgy ensemble pieces that seemed to be invoking some sort of distant tribal consciousness . (Think This Mortal Coil's 'It'll End in Tears' and 'Filigree and Shadow' albums, Dead Can Dance, and even an experimental version of Talk Talk). In later years, NDW were suitably lauded by international music luminaries such as Peter Gabriel, but subsequent releases never seemed to quite match this ground-breaking, timeless and supremely introspective gem. In the spine-tingling "Mr Suharto Man" (with a disembodied, reverberating guitar riff that gets right under the skin) the Indonesian leader looks meanacingly out to the Timor Sea and - like some delusional demigod - claims it as his own. Not Drowning Waving looked within themselves, and what they reflected back resonated with discrimminating music afficionados throughout 'Terror' Australis. Led by David Bridie (later of My Friend The Chocolate Cake), Not Drowning Waving mixed World Music with Pop sensibilities and created a unique and warm sound that was purely Australian, seemingly untouched by any musical scene or genre.
