Filmed in high definition and taken from two stunning concerts given by Porcupine Tree in Tilburg, The Netherlands, at the end of the Fear of a Blank Planet tour in October 2008, this standard edition of Anesthetize includes 130 minutes of Porcupine Tree in performance. Directed by long-term PT visual collaborator, Lasse Hoile. The film begins with a backstage introduction, taking you from the dressing room to the live arena, following the band all the way. They stand, pose and throw themselves into ‘Fear of a Blank Planet’ – the self titled track from the 2008 tour which this DVD depicts. Track after track the band deliver with precision and detail like no other. The high definition camera’s capture a range of viewpoints and these have clearly been edited over and over to provide unrivalled live viewing. After each song finishes, the audience tonight clap in appreciation, often mirroring that of the Tilburg crowd, with some members of tonight’s performance giving a standing ovation for those tracks which they favoured. Hearing a ‘Yes Mate’ when one track was introduced was symbolic of genuine fans getting what they had been waiting two years for.You might think that 130 minutes for a concert is quite an epic undertaking, however you would not believe how truly stunning this live DVD is. Worth every second of the wait, there is also an important message here about not rushing to throw out all of your discography regardless of quality; whereas Porcupine Tree have sat down, considered all possible options and created something which will outshine all that cross its path in 2010. Following on with hits such as ‘Half-Light’, ‘Sever’, ‘Sleep of no dreaming’ and ‘Halo’, you can’t help but feel drawn in. If you have never heard of Porcupine Tree, get yourself their ‘Stars Die: The Delirium Years 1991-1997’ (for earlier work), or better still, pick up a copy of later albums like ‘Fear of a Blank Planet’, or perhaps just do the honourable and decent thing and plump straight for this DVD. You will not regret it.
