The Dutch Radio Recordings Vol.4: Parkpop Festival Den Haag [Live -01/07/1984] (Disc 4 of 5)
- "Fuck off Jim Kerr". One of popular music's great battle cries, uttered by
Adrian Borland and captured on this intense recording of The Sound playing
at the Parkpop Festival in 1984, one of the biggest free events in Europe.
The Sound played it twice & this is the first one. (Renascent)
This is madness. Beautiful madness, but barking all the same. This is a band
who came into being after the implosion of a sarf London punk band and once
they'd regrouped as The Sound it seems that they
spent most of the 80's having their live shows recorded by Dutch radio
stations. The fact that Renascent has released five full albums of this
doesn't
drop the barmy-meter a notch, but these albums offer two things. First up,
they're great snapshots of the time when punk was very, very dead and
the new romantics were busy robbing the corpse and trying to figure out how
to play their older brother's synth, a confused and quite shitty musical
decade and these albums are proof positive that it wasn't all Simple
Minds and simpler Bono offences. Second up, The Sound do have good tunes that
retain the punk feel, but mess with the format to include keyboards, brass
and being able to play them. Melody and
muscle. The price is right and the sound quality is superb!
