Brilliant albums create their own setting, scene and feeling. They conjure
up images that flow along from the songs, weaving the music through an imagined
reality. With their debut, Funeral, the Arcade Fire have created a vignette
that combines loss, love, and hope. The band, which pulled together after a
string of personal losses, have used music’s cathartic nature to create
a grand album that evokes images of the band overcoming their pain in a worn
and dreary Montreal. The album starts out with four songs entitled “Neighborhood”,
each detailing different, but interwoven, stories. These songs tackle personal
problems ranging from suicide in “Neighborhood #2 (Laika)” to a
loss of power “in the heart of man” in “Neighborhood #3 (Power
Out).” Lead singer Win Butler demonstrates passion and range in each
of the songs. His vocals easily transition from a primal yell to a melodic
harmonization with his wife, Régine Chassagne. The songs shift from
guitar and bass-driven anthems to slower pieces, awash with strings. The transitions
between songs are smooth, helping to create a sense of unity throughout the
album. "Funeral" reaches an energized peak at “Rebellion (Lies).” Through
intense piano and vocals, the listener is cautioned, “Every time you
close your eyes/ Lies, lies.” The band realizes that the pains in life
cannot be merely pushed away, but instead must be addressed. The Arcade Fire
have used the healing power of music to deal with their tragedies, and in the
process have given the public an amazing album for their music collection. This
album is a killer.
