After their succesful debut "Olympian" in 1995, Gene and their record
company Polydor pulled out all the stops for the next album "Drawn To
The Deep End" in the hope of breaking the band into the mainstream market.
New material previewed during 1996 live shows revealed new tracks "Save
Me I'm Yours", "Speak To Me Someone" and "Fighting Fit" to
be filled with promise.
The album took eight months to record as producer Chris Hughes attempted to
perfect Gene's songs, to smooth out rough edges. The record company did its
part too providing the album with extravagant packaging and a grandiose design
to fit the album title.
However Gene's songs have never been about absolute perfection. Live shows
revealed a band full of passion, energy and spontaneity. "Revelations"
finds Gene in a much more upbeat and confident mood, take for example the song "Fill
Her Up" about the joys of drinking. "Mayday", "The British
Disease" and
first single "As Good As It Gets" are consequently powerfully driven,
live sounding fast songs with sharp lyrics. Outstanding tracks especially appear
in the latter part of the album. The ballad "Angel", the brilliant
melodic power of "The Looker" and
the closing "You'll Never Walk Again" would easily sit alongside
the best that Gene have produced.
