Compilation albums really do have a bad reputation: either there's a contractual
obligation to fullfil and/or the band's been dropped. The latter is certainly
what happened here. Phonogram's well documented dumping of AAE makes the liner
notes sound hollow and facile. However, the words are true. All About Eve really
were a great band. Listen to this and find out why... Opening with "Our
Summer", you get an idea of essential oils of AAE - wistful lyrics about
the joys of love and youth, well arranged guitars, melodic bass playing and
a solid drum track. Adding to the band's woes, Tim Bricheno left in 1990 for
the Sisters of Mercy, leaving CHURCH Marty Willson-Piper to fill the gap. AAE
lasted one more album, the psychadelic "Ultraviolet", on MCA, then
disbanded. They have since reformed (with Willson-Piper on guitar) and let's
hope that this time they get the success they deserved a decade ago.
