The Sheila Divine's debut album "New Parade" makes you feel you
have returned to the '80s. The Sheila Divine craft exquisitely put-together
pop-rock of a type that is by and large absent from today's music scene, offering
frequent tips of the hat to The Smiths and The Comsat Angels. "Hum, "
a rant against manufactured radio hits, is an especially fine song, showcasing
singer Aaron Perrino's outstanding range, both vocal and emotional. Musically
seen this is a quality album, at times quirky, whimsical and witty. In other
places more direct, building tight rock songs around swirling guitars. New Parade
is an album that improves with each airing, the complexity of the songs best
appreciated with familiarity, although the likes of "Hum", "Like
a Criminal" and "I'm a Believer" are strong enough to be
able to sell the band musically with their first hearing. Highly recommended
to those who miss the British Bedsit bands, or those who missed them.
