The Gathering return with their latest full-length CD “Souvenirs” free of recordlabel interference that seemed to trouble the band as the bio information for their “Black Light District” CD implied. As expected from the recordings on the “Black Light District” CD, The Gathering has taken their total artistic freedom and created a non-commercial, introspective release that is incomparable. ”Even The Spirits Are Afraid” is beautiful blend of Anneke’s heavenly vocals, with experimental sounds, odd drumbeats and diverse song structures. Actually, that previous statement would be the best way to describe the CD overall. While most reviews focus on what the song sounds like or reminds you of, “Souvenirs” is a collection of individual journeys through the mind, body, soul and spirit. The atmospheric aura that emanates from the disc is most refreshing and gives one a certain sense of calm and peace. The Gathering has once again accomplished their goal of avoiding comparison to other bands and genres. People who have been fans in the past and accepted the gradual changes over the years from Mandylion to now will truly appreciate the depth of the work The Gathering has put into this disc.
