A couple of years ago when bands like Interpol and the Strokes were turning
into household names and once again making the post-punk era a hot spot for
indie rock bands, there were other groups that seemed to fall through the cracks;
one
of those bands would be Longwave, founded in 1999 by frontman Steve Schlitz.
They released their first album in 2000, Endsongs, and followed it up with2003's
earnest The Strangest Things. With their space rock influences from legends
like U2, Psychedelic Furs and Television, there is no reason Longwave
shouldn’t be at the forefront of the New York music movement. Their third
full length record has been produced by John Leckie, who
has helped Radiohead and Stone Roses make fabulous
records. The songs on their new album are a pastiche of their diverse style
that comes off as more psychedelic on this album than on The Strangest Things,
which
was
equally
impressive with its plaintive lyrics and arrangements. “Life
of the Party”
begins with slight drum glitches and Steve’s distorted voice, which is
akin to Julian Casablancas. The song echoes dreamy pop with swirling noises
and synths as the song is mainly stabilized at one level. "We’re
Not Gonna Crack" which integrates fast
guitars and with heavy guitar riffs and an overall exploding
arrangement that showcases Longwave’s edgier side. Longwave's Brit-pop
is
crisp and catchy, their spacey guitar-work spiraling like the cosmos and their
credibility not (yet) deterred
by commercial success.
