One of the most underrated and underappreciated new wave bands (from
Holland) of the 80's is The Dutch. Their influences ranged from Magazine and
Japan to Joe Jackson and Peter Hammill but they gradually managed to create
their own unique sound. A subtle mixture
of spidery guitars, lush saxophones, and elastic (fretless) bass. Their
1983 debut single "This Is Welfare" gave the band quite a lot of airplay on
the main radiostations in Holland and also reached no. 25 in the charts. Their
two albums have now been thankfully digitally remastered and reissued on one
CD. Anyone who likes 80's synthpop should definitely buy this and be prepared
to be blown away.
