2006 digitally remastered reissue of Japan's live 2-LP - Oil On Canvas - comes in a wonderful booklet featuring new photos, primarily by Fin Costello who has captured visual images of Japan right from their creation. The group have been involved in this project, and the results are plain to hear with the vast improvements to home hi-fi's. After their release of Tin Drum in 1980, success paid its price and Japan felt they had peaked and couldn't take the project any further as a group. A farewell tour took place in 1983, and this became the source of their final release â??Oil on Canvas', a double album, which comprised primarily of tracks from â??Tin Drum' and â??Quiet Life'. You can tell that the fans worshipped the group and seemed to know all tracks from hearing the first bar of Synth. The oriental sound mixed with 80's snare drums and Sylvian's unique vocals sound excellent 20 odd years on. Probably not the most energetic group on stage, their tight set more than made up for this. Oil on Canvas proved that Japan could do their thing live as well as in the studio and this album still stands out as one of perfection.
