Stellastarr's self-titled debut album blends the post-punk of the late '70s and early '80s with the college rock of the late '80s and early '90s. Their eponymously titled debut album is up there with the best debut albums of this, or any decade. There's nothing too new about what they're doing, but the way they've amalgamated their influences is impressive to say the least. There's a plethora of cool bands they've managed to ape, from Joy Division, and (early) Duran Duran on opener 'In The Walls', a breathless pop song that bursts with unbridalled joy, and 'Jenny' is practically a Pixies/Pulp pastiche. While most guitar bands these days purport to being influenced by Black Francis and co, Stellarstarr actually go someway to pulling it off. There's shades of Talking Heads and The Frames in 'My Coco', and unbelievably they even have periods where they're a bit like Pulp, notably on 'A Million Reasons' and 'Untitled'. But the fact they sound like other bands should be met with derision surely? Not when it's this jaw-droppingly effortless. They manage to subtly change dynamics with a proficiency few bands achieve in their whole career, let alone on their first album. They vary staccato with sweeping, jangly, dreamy moments and the retro nature of their work is never laboured: what they're doing is simply making great music.
