Beginning with a rousing chant of self-identification and concluding with a recording of some crowd applause, Pete Wylie's first album in almost a decade is reassuringly immodest: whether or not the lyrical content is autobiographical, his fixation on the first person pronoun is all encompassing. Yet you can't take away his unshakeable sincerity, reflected in a dozen examples of anthemic pop which simultaneously recall Sixties Mersey-beat and, perhaps more surprisingly, the Manic Street Preachers. Admittedly, a few songs are way too long, and while â??Loverboyâ? refers to Dolly Parton's classic â??Joleneâ?, it also â?? unfortunately â?? echoes â??Jilted Johnâ?. But these minor quibbles are more than redeemed by excellent tracks such as â??Disneyland Foreverâ?, the spiky punky opener â??Never Loved As A Childâ? and the spirited single â??Heart As Big As Liverpoolâ?. It's unashamedly sentimental in places, but Wylie's heart-on-sleeve stance is ultimately an appealing one. All in all, this is a brilliant album, one that fans will love as well as anyone looking for that classic '80s sound.
