Although, Hatful of Hollow is the most revered of the Smiths' semi-compilations, 'Louder Than Bombs' punchy mixture of A and B side material is near perfection and certainly the best introduction to the group you could possibly wish for. The album sees the Smiths moving towards the more polished chunky sound of Strangeways, Here We Come, although a healthy selection of earlier material remains. The excellent b-sides â??Girl Afraidâ? and â??These Things Take Timeâ? round off 1984 with great aplomb and we start to move towards the present with the upbeat tones of â??Shakespeare's Sisterâ?. However, a new vibrancy had been apparent in the Smiths' work ever since â??Panicâ?. The riffs had become much more hard hitting and the lyrics demanded definite action rather than wistful reflection. Arrange the tracks in the order of release and this becomes much more obvious. Even the album's cover was the boldest to date. Whereas previously we'd been treated to drab pictures of obscure people, Louder Than Bombs' striking orange sleeve sported an attractive picture of Morrissey heroine â?? Shelagh Delaney. It seems that the Smiths were responding to Marr's clarion call for a new direction â?? â??We're going to end up like the Beach Boys in the blue and white striped shirtsâ?! Certainly the newer material paved the way for the sparkling Strangeways, Here We Come later in the year. However, the beauty of Louder Than Bombs lies in the sheer volume, quality and variety of the tracks. A potted history of the Smiths, it offers an excellent flavour of their evolving sound from â??Hand in Gloveâ? to â??You Just Haven't Earned It Yet, Babyâ?. As a perfect complement to an existing Smiths collection or a cracking introduction to this remarkable group, Louder Than Bombs is impossible to beat and a selection to treasure.
