"Rank" was released one year after "Strangeways, Here We Come" and it appears that it is simply the mandatory Live album. Rank was recorded in October 1986 during The Queen Is Dead tour, a period when "Ask" and "Is It Really So Strange?" were still brand new hits. However, it was only released two years later, when The Smiths had already split up. From the 21 songs performed that night, 14 were included in this album, and it's not surprising that half of them are The Queen Is Dead tracks. The Queen Is Dead and Panic open the concert, giving the audience a general idea of what the spectacle they are about to see is like. Marr's virtuosity is especially noticeable in "The Draize Train", a riveting instrumental track not found in any other album. In the middle of so many guitar notes and drum beats echoes Morrissey's captivating voice, worshipping Oscar Wilde in "Cemetry Gates" or singing the miseries of life in "I Know It's Over" and "The Boy With The Thorn In His Side". Rank still reserves some more other enjoyable surprises, such as the creative "What She Said/Rubber Ring" medley, or the verses of Elvis Presley's (Marie's The Name) Of His Latest Flame as the intro for "Rusholme Ruffians". Rank captures The Smiths at their best, serving as the ultimate testimony of their excellence not only as composers, but also as true rock'n'roll performers.
