Having gained the attentions of thousands of disillusioned youngsters Morrisey decided to adopt a more socially pointed approach to their next album, Meat is Murder having seemingly poured all his emotion into the first two albums. Meat is Murder was a big commercial success and gave the Smiths their first number one, reflecting the groups growing popularity and commercial approach. The album itself saw Morrisey and Marr at their creative peak musically as they utilised a number of different pop and rock styles. The lyrics Morrisey provided were witty and often intense while he often injected some strong social issues as he attacked the likes of headmasters, child abusers and, of course meat eaters. Johnny Marr was also on top form on tracks such as "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore Showing" the bond was still holding strong. Many felt that this was the Smiths greatest album and it is hard to argue against. "How Soon Is Now", "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" and "The Headmaster Ritual" are both witty and loaded. This album doesn't have the same feeling and emotion that comes from 'The Smiths" and 'The Queen Is Dead' and so it would not be the first Smiths album to buy but it is still a superb album.
