This release on Strange Fruit/BBC Music covers session material taken from two sessions recorded for the John Peel show back in 1979. On both occasions, the sessions pre-dated the albums on which the material eventually appeared, and thus presents an opportunity to hear the songs in a less polished, not-quite-finished form. The January 1979 session yields a spirited "Me, I Disconnect From You" that differs from the album version in shifting the balance slightly from synths to guitars. "Down In The Park" seems to have changed less over time, and the differences between this session version and the album track are restricted to those you'd expect in a radio session. The same goes for "I Nearly Married A Human" - different, but not remarkably so. The second session, recorded in May of 1979, is a preview of material that was later to appear on The Pleasure Principle. First of the tracks from this session is a version of "Cars". This is markedly different (to the Numan fan, anyway) from the album version, with a different-sounding synth lead and none of the prominent tambourine work that featured in the version most people are familiar with. The "Airlane" version has only minor differences, while the early "Films" varies more dramatically, with changes to some of the synth lines. The final three tracks are live, taken from Gary's appearance at the Year Of The Child charity concert in 1979. These feature the Touring Principle band again, and consist of solid versions of "Me, I Disconnect From You", "Metal" and "Down In The Park", all with large doses of the synth pyrotechnics. Overall, this is primarily of interest for existing Numan fans, especially those like myself who for one reason or another didn't pick up the original Peel Sessions CD. However, it's also a gentle introduction to Numan live (or live-ish, anyway) for those who know the studio albums but for various reasons haven't heard his live material from Gary Numan's most interesting period.
